Hot rod is a car/vehicle which have been customized for performance, and/or appearance. The fact is, nobody knows for sure the origin of the term "hot rod". The best explanation is that the term is a contraction of "hot roadster", meaning a roadster that was modified to go fast.

Paramount Pictures has another explanation of what is the meaning of "Hot Rod", which is an uproarious comedy starring "Saturday Night Live" Andy Samberg.

Samberg plays as an amateur stuntman Rod Kimble who lives with his mother (Sissy Spacek) that has apparently married again with a jerk name Frank (Ian McShane) who already has a nerd son Kevin (Jorma Taccone). Rod’s regular activity is doing crazy stunt like jumping out a milk truck to a public swimming pool.

One day when his stepfather get sick and needs $50,000 operation, Rod decided to make the craziest stunt ever done to raise the money for Frank’s operation, so he can kick his ass when he gets better.
